Project from the heart - Homefront Cooking

On this Memorial Day, we reflect on those who gave their lives in service to our nation. Cemeteries across the nation will be adorned with tiny U.S.  flags, honoring our veterans. In our family, we proudly fly the flag, and if we can, visit a local military cemetery to pay our respects.

My father, a World War II veteran, was adamant about respecting the flag, and observing Memorial Day, not as a holiday, but as a day of remembrance. Sure, we had a BBQ or outdoor fun, but we never forgot who had fought for the freedoms we enjoyed.

It is in memory of my father, and in thanks to all who have served, whether active duty or from the homefront, that I dedicated my cookbook/anthology, Homefront Cooking.

Homefront Cooking is a collection of true stories, written by veterans and their loved ones. There are stories that have passed through several generation, and stories from current operations. They all share two things: some aspect of military life, and a connection to the food that nourishes us and brings us together.

The stories are accompanied by favorite family recipes: ones that meant home to veterans returning from war, ones that helped families survive during dark days, ones that were prepared on days of celebration, or ones that remind the writers of their heritage and loved ones.

In addition to preserving these stories and recipes, the goal of this project is to raise funds for veterans ' causes. Therefore, all author profits will be donated to vetted charitable veterans' organizations.

I hope many will enjoy and benefit from Homefront Cooking. It is scheduled to be published by Skyhorse in time for Memorial Day, 2018.
