I’m excited to announce I will continue to mentor in this fabulous contest! I was a PitchWars mentee in 2015, a mentor in 2017, and I know what a tremendous opportunity this is for writers who want to advance their work to the next level, and land an agent. Over half of the 2015 and 2016 mentees now have agent representation, and many have book deals. But that's not even the best part. By entering Pitchwars, you open yourself to a community of writers who are supportive, responsive, and incredibly helpful. Even if you are not selected as a mentee, you will gain experience and new friends. A little about me. I have a varied background, working in the health care industry as a Registered Nurse, case manager, college instructor, and more; ran my own interior design company; wrote several columns for magazines and local publications; all the while bopping around the world with my military husband and raising two great kids. I've written, directed, produced, a...

On this Memorial Day, we reflect on those who gave their lives in service to our nation. Cemeteries across the nation will be adorned with tiny U.S. flags, honoring our veterans. In our family, we proudly fly the flag, and if we can, visit a local military cemetery to pay our respects. My father, a World War II veteran, was adamant about respecting the flag, and observing Memorial Day, not as a holiday, but as a day of remembrance. Sure, we had a BBQ or outdoor fun, but we never forgot who had fought for the freedoms we enjoyed. It is in memory of my father, and in thanks to all who have served, whether active duty or from the homefront, that I dedicated my cookbook/anthology, Homefront Cooking . Homefront Cooking is a collection of true stories, written by veterans and their loved ones. There are stories that have passed through several generation, and stories from current operations. They all share two things: some aspect of military life, and a connection to the ...

I'm so excited to have been chosen as a PitchWars mentor in the Adult and New Adult categories. I was a mentee in 2015, and I know what a tremendous opportunity this is for writers who want to advance their work to the next level, and land an agent. A little about me. I have a varied background, working in the health care industry as a Registered Nurse, case manager, college instructor, and more, ran my own interior design company, wrote several columns for magazines and local publications, all the while bopping around the world with my military husband and raising two great kids. I've written, directed, produced, and (just once) acted in theatrical plays. That part of my life has passed, and now I devote my time to writing, editing, travel, and grandkids. So I have loads of life experience as well as writing experience. I belong to several in-person writing groups, many on-line groups, and attend as many writing conferences as I can squeeze in. I write adult novels, th...
Defining Success

Let’ s say I decide I want a body like Heidi Klum. I run my butt off, eat nothing but cucumber slices between lettuce leaves and drink 100% purified water from the Austrian Alps. Chances are great that even though I have done everything in my power, I will fail. There are things, like genetics, that are simply beyond my control. Another example. My goal is to write best-selling novels. I attend workshops, classes, conferences, write every day, read everything I can in the time I have left. Yet st ill, the probability of reaching that goa l is very slim. There is tremendous competition from others doing all those things, who may be more talented, lucky or connected. So how does one achieve success? That is, personal success, the feeling that you have reached your own objective s . Here ar e some suggested steps . 1. Define success in your own terms. Not what your mother, spouse or best friend thinks makes you a success, but what fu...
